Update Covid-19 & the market situation– 30-10-2020

The Covid-19 outbreak and the market situation urges Caroz to inform our customers about the current situation and the potential impact on the business of our customers. The main difference between the current outbreak compared to the outbreak in March is that the business overall is still going on. Production facilities are still producing, demand of goods is high, capacity is limited and working from home is still the standard. This combined, results in major challenges for daily operations.

Our service is highly valued by Caroz and we will continue to provide our customers with our full cooperation and commitment.  Despite the challenges Caroz will do their best efforts in coordinating and monitoring the transport flows of our customers.  Below a summary of the current events which has impact on the daily operation within the different countries and / or transport modality.

Sea (Global):

  • Capacity both Import and Export is under high pressure due to several effects:
    • Blank sailings result in considerable imbalance. Especially on the routes Asia – Europe v.v..
    • Capacity is re-routed to Asia – Transpacific because of extreme high rates.
    • Challenge to guarantee on-board, due to the limited space and limited vessels.
    • Equipment (especially 40’HC and Reefers) is extremely rare, due to the worldwide imbalance. Furthermore, due to the space issues on the vessels, it’s almost impossible to reposition empty equipment.
    • Peak Season Surcharges are already announced by carriers which increase the freight rates considerably.

Road (Europe):

  • Limited number of employees at load- and discharge addresses, due to sick and/or infected people.
  • Increased number of infected drivers, rail-operators, terminal employees and customs employees etc.
  • Increased number of restrictions: for example, the driver is obligated to remain in the truck or there is ambiguity regarding the signing of documentation (CMR).
  • Longer waiting times at load – and discharge addresses, which can result in delays.
  • Restrictions in different countries, which can result in delays. For example:
    • Spain: special documentation required in the region Navarra, Aragón and La Rioja.
    • Poland: closing schools which force employees to work from home and result in shortage on the work floor.
    • Italy: Regio Lazio requires special documentation.
  • Huge capacity decrease in available trucks. The current transport barometer shows a ratio of 70% freight demand and 30% available truck capacity. This has a direct result on tranport costs and availability of capacity.

Multimodal:

  • Announcement of strikes in Bilboa, which potential can result in delays.
  • Turbulent weather conditions which can cause delays. Especially applicable for the following countries; ES, PT, GB, IE, BE and NL.
  • Shortages in equipment and limited capacity.

General:

  • Our partners (carriers, customs etc.) are mainly working from home and are often difficult to reach. This creates delays in our daily operations, but also delays in answering the questions of our customers.

Brexit:

  • Still a lot is unknown, however in 60 days it should be definite. As Caroz we strive to prepare us in the best way with the information received from the different sources and strive to be ready for the future process defined.

In order to stay focus and remain as efficient as possible, we would like to ask you to prepare your customer service to prevent extra questions regarding your consignments at Caroz. We would like to ask the following:

Prevention is better than cure. In response to the developments around the Corona virus, Caroz has decided to set in place the following protocol. With this written communication we would like to inform you about the measurements Caroz will apply to the daily business as from today.

Precautionary measurements at the office

To ensure that the virus will not spread further, Caroz has decided to limit the number of employees in the office. The selection is made per department / modality. Our employees that work from their home office are 100% functional and are within reach (phone or e-mail). This means that you as a customer are still able to reach us via the familiar way. In case your contact person is not in the office, a colleague will transfer you to the respective colleague.

In addition, Caroz has decided to name Sabine Klesman as crisis manager (+316 3178 4876 or s.klesman@caroz.com).
